Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
ACT
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (or ACT) is one of the new behavioural therapies that has evolved from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). ACT encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and feelings without judgement, rather than trying to change or suppress them, and to commit to acting in a way that aligns with their values. The capacity to do this is built by cultivating an underlying appreciation and awareness of the present moment.
The philosophy of mindfulness is promoted by ACT as an important component of both psychological support and behaviour change. ACT also values clarification and committed action as essential elements of psychological flexibility.
In a session using ACT, you will be encouraged to notice and name thoughts and to make room for all emotions, instead of challenging and restructuring your thinking and feelings.
