Compassion-focused therapy (CFT)
CFT
Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is a system of psychotherapy developed by Paul Gilbert that integrates techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with concepts from evolutionary psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, Buddhist psychology, and neuroscience.
CFT is a therapeutic approach that aims to help those who struggle with shame and self-criticism, often resulting from early experiences of abuse or neglect. CFT teaches individuals to cultivate the skills of self-compassion and to address self-criticism. Such skills are thought to help regulate mood and lead to feelings of safety, self-acceptance, and comfort. This approach acknowledges the importance of treating oneself with kindness and understanding, especially when facing difficulties.
